Clara's Story: Finding Stability After Crisis

*Clara is a single mother of twin daughters who were born with epilepsy. When she left an abusive relationship, she suddenly found herself without income, overwhelmed by her children's medical needs, and unsure where to turn.
She found Safe & Sound.
From the beginning, Clara was connected to supportive parenting groups where she found community, guidance, and a sense of belonging during an isolating period. While she navigated urgent needs like food, diapers, and housing support, she also found space for her children to play and feel safe in Safe & Sound's Therapeutic Playroom.
"Safe & Sound has given us more than support. They gave us a place of healing and a future filled with possibility.”
Clara
Over time, Clara’s engagement deepened. Care coordinators helped her access legal support, parenting resources, and other services that allowed her to move beyond the immediate crisis and begin rebuilding her life step by step. Through these connections, she also enrolled in a yoga instructor certification program, an opportunity that helped her regain confidence and envision a more stable and empowered future.
Today, Clara has secured full custody of her daughters and is working toward a future defined not by crisis, but by stability and possibility.
Clara's journey is what Stronger Futures, Built Together looks like in practice, one family, met with care and dignity, at a time.

A Call That Lasted Years

Safe & Sound’s TALK Line provides free support for parents and caregivers navigating life’s challenges — offering compassionate listening, guidance, and connection in moments of stress or uncertainty.
For *Darlene, one call made all the difference.
When her daughter was two years old, Darlene called the TALK Line, feeling overwhelmed by everyday parenting struggles and power battles that often ended in tears and frustration. A trained volunteer listened, reassured her, and helped her approach those difficult moments with greater patience and confidence.
Ten years later, Darlene reached out again, this time during a much more difficult chapter. Her daughter, now 12, was struggling with serious emotional challenges, including self-harm. Through Safe & Sound, Darlene was connected to weekly therapy services to help process her grief, fears, and complex emotions as a mother.
She also chose to continue building a relationship with Sheila, a TALK Line volunteer, who became a steady source of support during some of the hardest years of her life.
For the past five years, Darlene and Sheila have spoken every week. While Sheila is not a therapist, the consistency, compassion, and trust she provided became deeply meaningful to Darlene and her family. Today, Darlene’s daughter is 18 and continues to navigate challenges with her mother’s love and support by her side.
Through Safe & Sound, Darlene found not only resources but a trusted connection that reminded her she did not have to face parenting alone.

Finding Strength as a Parent

Janani with her Children
When Janani first came to Safe & Sound in 2022, she felt overwhelmed. She was caring for her five-year-old son with special needs and her infant daughter, and she did not know where to turn for support. Navigating school systems, finding the right resources for both children felt increasingly difficult and isolating.
After connecting with Safe & Sound, her experience began to change.
Janani started attending Supportive Family Services, parent workshops, Parent Cafés, and sensory play sessions with her children. With each visit, she felt a sense of hope that she had not felt in a long time. Over time, she also engaged in the Integrated Family Services program that helped her set goals, build confidence, and strengthen her parenting.
“My journey with Safe & Sound has been one of resilience, growth, and hope. With their support, I’ve learned how to help my children thrive, believe in myself, and take steps toward a brighter future for our family.”
Janani
Safe & Sound became a steady source of guidance for her family. Her son received support to help him manage emotions, build friendships, and succeed at school. Her daughter had space to play, explore, and thrive. For Janani, Safe & Sound became a place to learn, rebuild confidence, and grow as a parent.
As her stability increased, Janani also began to reconnect with something she loves — baking. With encouragement from Safe & Sound, she started taking small orders for cakes and pastries and contributed desserts to community events. This became an important step toward building a small business and a more stable future for her family.
Today, she describes seeing real change in both her children and herself. Her son is developing new skills, her daughter is flourishing, and Janani is building a stronger home while working toward financial independence.
Safe & Sound has become a place of ongoing support, not only in moments of crisis, but throughout a family’s journey of growth.

Javier's Story: A Father's Dedication

*Javier has spent much of his life helping others. As a chef and mentor, he has supported young adults in building culinary skills and creating positive paths forward. He understands the power of investing in someone's future.
That commitment became deeply personal when his young daughter experienced a traumatic event. Javier gained sole custody and made a life-changing decision: he stepped back from full-time work so he could focus on her healing and well-being.
Javier first connected with Safe & Sound through a referral from the Latino Task Force, seeking rental assistance. What he found was a team ready to support both him and his daughter as they navigated an incredibly difficult chapter.
His case manager worked alongside him to access housing resources, strengthen his resume, and connect him to services that could help stabilize the family. As involvement from other agencies gradually decreased, Safe & Sound remained a consistent source of support.
That consistency has been especially important for Javier’s daughter. During meetings, she often chooses to stay close to her father, reflecting the trust and security she finds in his presence. Safe & Sound staff continue to gently encourage connection and engagement, helping her build confidence and feel safe in community spaces.
Today, Javier's daughter receives support through an Individualized Education Plan at school, and Javier has secured a new part-time position that allows him to remain present for her needs. He is also working toward longer-term goals, including stable housing and eventually launching his own food business through support from Safe & Sound's Pathway to Prosperity program.
Javier's story is one of resilience, love, and unwavering commitment. Together, father and daughter are building a future defined not by the challenges they faced, but by the strength they found along the way.
Their journey is a reminder that stronger futures are built together.

Maria and Lucas: Finding Safety, Strength, and Hope

When *Maria and *Lucas arrived in San Francisco with their three-year-old son, a promise of housing and support had fallen through, leaving the family stranded and struggling to find a place to stay.
They learned about Safe & Sound through another family in a temporary shelter and came to us exhausted and afraid, mostly concerned about their young son.
The Safe & Sound Care Coordinator team welcomed them with warmth and without judgment. The team listened, reassured them they were not alone, and connected them to Safe & Sound’s Integrated Family Services program to begin building stability.

Their son had significant health and emotional challenges, including a heart murmur and asthma requiring frequent emergency care. The instability of shelter life also affected his behavior, leaving him easily overwhelmed. Maria wanted to support him but often felt unsure how.
She began attending Safe & Sound’s parenting classes and workshops, where she learned how trauma impacts children’s behavior and how to respond with patience, empathy, and calm.
Safe & Sound supported the family with housing resources, career supports, and practical assistance. The team also helped Lucas apply for In-Home Supportive Services, allowing him to become certified and begin working.
Parents/Clients participate in Safe & Sound's sewing class, part of the Pathways to Prosperity Program. The class helps families build practical skills, pursue educational goals, and create new opportunities for income and long-term stability.
Over time, the family stabilized. Their son started school, and teachers soon shared that he was calmer, happier, and thriving in class.
Today, Maria continues to participate in Safe & Sound’s workshops and connect with other families. Maria and Lucas often describe Safe & Sound as the place where they found stability, hope, and confidence as parents — a turning point in their journey.
Their story reflects what is possible when families are met with care, connection, and support at the moment they need it most.
“I finally understood what he was trying to tell me through his anger. Now I can help him feel safe again. Safe & Sound helped me become the parent my son needed during one of the most difficult times.”

Finding Stability Through Change

After her parents decided to separate, seven-year-old *Yessenia began struggling in ways that worried her family. She refused to go to school, was afraid to sleep alone, clung closely to her mother, and sometimes pulled out her own hair when she felt overwhelmed. Seeking support, her family turned to Safe & Sound.
During her first conversations with a Safe & Sound therapist, Yessenia's mother shared the challenges her family was facing. Tears filled her eyes as she described feeling helpless, guilty, and unsure of how to help her daughter through such a difficult transition.
In the Therapy room, Yessenia gravitated toward the dollhouse. The dolls often yelled at one another, and sometimes one would go missing. Although she rarely spoke directly about her family, our Safe & Sound therapist noticed the themes emerging through her play. One day, Yessenia pointed to a child doll, declared, "She did it!" and threw it across the room.
Rather than reprimanding her, the therapist stayed with the feelings behind the behavior. Through gentle questions and conversations with the dolls, she helped Yessenia put words to her sadness, anger, and confusion. The therapist reassured her that her parents' separation was not her fault and helped her begin to understand and process the changes happening in her family.
“I felt lost and unsure of how to help my daughter. Safe & Sound helped us find our way forward. They gave Yessenia the tools to understand her feelings and gave our family hope during a challenging time.”
Yessenia's mom
Over time, Yessenia learned healthy ways to cope when her feelings became overwhelming. She began to understand that some problems are adult problems that children cannot solve. She learned that she could feel angry with her parents and still love them deeply.
Support extended beyond the Therapy room. Yessenia's therapist connected her family to Kids’ Turn, a Safe & Sound program that helps families adjust to separation. Her mother joined the Single Parent Network, and her father received support through the TALK Line. Parents were invited into therapy sessions, where they reassured Yessenia that none of the changes in their family were her responsibility.
Slowly, Yessenia began to heal. She stopped pulling out her hair, became less fearful and clingy, and felt ready to return to school. Her parents learned new ways to communicate with her and began navigating co-parenting and shared custody together.
There is still a road ahead for Yessenia and her family, but today she knows something every child deserves to know: she has a mother and a father who love her, and a community of support helping her family move forward with hope.

Finding Safety Through Play

When an 18-month-old child and their mother first came to Safe & Sound, both were carrying the weight of significant trauma. The child could not leave their mother's side, even for a moment, making it nearly impossible for the mother to participate in therapy, engage in case management, or focus on her own healing.
Our Therapeutic Children's Playroom team responded with patience, consistency, and a relationship-based approach. One staff member created a personalized social storyboard, which the family reviewed together before each visit. Through simple visuals, the storyboard helped the child know what to expect, recognize and name emotions, and build a sense of safety through routine.
Over six months of steady support, trust slowly took root. The child began engaging more with playroom staff, then gradually with other children. Today, the child can play independently for up to 10 minutes, a small window that represents a significant leap in confidence and emotional security.
That time has made a real difference for the whole family. While her child plays safely nearby, the mother is now able to participate in case management and therapy, space she didn't have before to focus on her own well-being.
The family's progress continues at its own pace. But each step is proof that healing rarely happens all at once and that patience, trust, and the right kind of support can help a parent and child heal together.
"Our Therapeutic Playroom is so much more than childcare. Through patient, consistent relationships and the power of play, children begin to feel safe enough to explore, learn, and connect. As they grow in confidence, caregivers are able to focus on their own healing, creating stronger families together. It is in those moments of trust and connection that the course of an entire family's journey can begin to change."
