Family Strengthening Forum: A Conversation on Prevention
Family Strengthening Forum: A Conversation on Prevention
In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Safe & Sound was honored to welcome Dr. Diana Ramos, Surgeon General of California, as the keynote speaker for our Family Strengthening Forum at UCSF. Dr. Ramos delivered a compelling message about the urgent need to prevent child abuse and support families across California.
Following her address, an engaging and insightful panel discussion featured Jahmal Miller, Chief Administrative Officer of Mercy Medical Group, and Dr. Pegah Faed, CEO of Safe & Sound. Together, they explored the impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the science behind toxic stress, and, most importantly, the tools and strategies available to protect and strengthen families. The forum offered a powerful reminder: with the right support, children and families can heal, thrive, and build strong futures.
Mayoral Candidates’ Forum on Foster Care and Juvenile Justice
Mayoral Candidates’ Forum on Foster Care and Juvenile Justice
In partnership with SFCASA, Safe & Sound hosted San Francisco’s first-ever Mayoral Candidates’ Forum focused on foster care and juvenile justice. Held at the historic Ruth Williams Bayview Opera House, the event brought together five leading mayoral candidates—then Mayor London Breed, Supervisors Ahsha Safai and Aaron Peskin, former Interim Mayor Mark Farrell, and nonprofit executive Daniel Lurie (who subsequently was elected mayor)—for a vital conversation about the city’s youth and families.
Staying true to our commitment to centering the voices of lived experts, parents and youth with lived experience in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems asked direct, thoughtful questions that grounded the discussion in real-world impact. The candidates shared a collective commitment to early intervention, culturally competent services, and collaborative community solutions.
While Safe & Sound remains a non-partisan organization and does not endorse candidates, we were heartened to hear each voice their support for evidence-based programs and policies promoting child and family well-being. Their participation reinforced the critical role of leadership in shaping a safer, healthier future for all children in San Francisco.
Blue Ribbon Celebration: Lighting Up the Night for Stronger Families
Blue Ribbon Celebration: Lighting Up the Night for Stronger Families
On Saturday, December 7th, Safe & Sound welcomed over 300 guests to the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco for our 27th annual Blue Ribbon Celebration. This year’s theme, “Light Up the Night,” served as a powerful tribute to the strength of our mission and the collective impact of our community.
Our community came together for an inspiring evening dedicated to recognizing the importance of preventing child abuse, strengthening families, and building a brighter future for all children. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the event raised almost $1M in critical funds to expand our work and deepen our impact across the Bay Area.
The guest speaker was Anna Kelleher, a native San Franciscan and a survivor of sexual, physical, and mental abuse. She shared her powerful and emotional story with the room and received a standing ovation.
Our CEO Pegah Faed paid tribute to Anna’s moving speech, saying “I think what was beautiful was to see her being able to be so brave and authentic in telling her story on stage in a room full of people that she didn’t know, and to be able to share how the work of Safe & Sound could prevent situations like hers. The whole point was to be reminded of why we’re there, and she brought the voice of the clients that we serve every day into that room.”
Safe & Sound is profoundly grateful to everyone who joined us for this special night—and to all those who continue to stand with us year-round. Your support ensures that our work continues, and that its impact will be felt for generations to come!
